Ethiopia Project 2014 with Leeds Uni RAG – sign up this week!
Calling all Leeds University students!
Doing much next summer? Fancy spending it playing football in the beautiful Ethiopian countryside, and improving the lives of some of the world’s most deprived children at the same time?
Football Action is delighted to have teamed up with Leeds RAG again to run their first joint project in Ethiopia next year. There are just a few days left to sign up – you can register on the Leeds University website until Monday 18th November.
What’s it all about?
A group of selected volunteers will spend four weeks playing games and coaching football to under-privileged children at our various projects across Ethiopia. The main aim of the project is to give these children some fun, while encouraging them to go to school and to learn life skills through football.
In the stunning hills of Lalibela, they will coach children from a deprived rural area on a pitch funded by Football Action. They will get the chance to play against a local team who have benefited from Football Action equipment and coaching. They can also explore the famous rock-hewn churches, taste the spicy local cuisine, and sample the pungent local brew they call Tej.
In Addis Ababa they will spend time coaching children from a lively inner-city school on another one of our pitches, as well as getting the chance to coach a group of deaf children whom we support. The trip will culminate in a Community ‘World Cup’ Tournament Day at the national stadium, where the children can show off their new skills.
What experience or skills do I need?
An interest in football and/or education is desirable, but no coaching or even football experience is essential! We mainly want enthusiastic people, who are up for a challenge, and will be happy playing games and football with the children we work with. We want both male and female volunteers to apply!
Incase you aren’t yet persuaded…
We ran similar projects last year – check out the photos and these comments from our volunteers:
“It was fantastic and a ‘never-forget’ experience”
“One of the greatest experiences of my life and I think I’ve met some people I will keep in contact with for the rest of my life.”
“I would recommend the trip to anyone and say give it a go.”
“A fantastically arranged trip from start to finish, which was made all the easier by some great organisation from the team.”
“Absolutely loved it, really enjoyed the project where we were welcomed by the Lalibela players with open arms.”
“It was a hugely enjoyable experience that will hopefully have a lasting effect on the children.”
