Kenya Project Kicks Off
We are delighted to announce that as of January 2014, we are officially kick-starting our first project in Kenya.
It was six months ago on a visit to Nakuru, Kenya that our trustee James was first introduced to children at the Giotto Dump Site. Living in a community literally situated on a landfill, the children had poor sanitation, few opportunities for sport and were often battling drug addictions.
Shocked and moved by these extreme conditions, Football Action initiated a daily sports programme to give the children a break from daily life, whilst also promoting a healthy routine and teaching essential life skills. In partnership with local NGO Our Home Nakuru, we employed two talented teenagers from the ‘Dumpsite’ to lead the after-school football sessions for 40 local children.
The coaching programme and provision of clothing (kindly donated by Kit Aid) have since enabled the children to begin their own football club. The Black Rhinos will enter three teams into a local league and play competitive matches on a regular basis. We think they’re going to be the next big thing – you heard it here first!
